Rupee appreciates against US dollar

The Pakistani rupee posted marginal gain against the US dollar, appreciating 0.01% in the inter-bank market on Tuesday. At close, the local currency settled at 279.67, a gain of Re0.03 against the greenback. On Monday, the local unit closed at 279.70, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The inflow of overseas workers’ remittances into Pakistan stood at $3.46 billion in January 2026, the SBP data showed on Tuesday. Remittances increased by nearly 15.4% year-on-year (YoY), compared to $3.0 billion recorded in the same month last year. Monthly remittances were down 4% from $3.59 billion in December. Moreover, the US dollar was weaker on Tuesday before the release of a slate of economic data that is expected to shape the path ahead for interest rates, while the yen firmed for the second day in the wake of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s election victory.
